Student Fellowships

2026

Request for Proposals CPIP Summer Research Fellowships for Graduate Student Affiliates

CPIP will offer summer research fellowships in 2026 to graduate students who are CPIP affiliates, as of February 2026. The deadline for submissions is Monday April 27, at 5 PM.

These fellowships can be used for stipend support or research expenses. Please submit (to Melinda Gormley – mgormley@uci.edu) a one-page description of your research project and, specifically, the progress you will make over the summer, along with a brief budget (which might only be one line). In a cover letter, include contact information for both you and your graduate advisor that states the full name, title, department, school, and email address for each of you. Include your anticipated graduation date.

Students who receive summer research fellowships will be required to present at a CPIP poster session or other workshop with short presentations during the fall quarter. At that time, a draft for circulation will be required. Please state that commitment in a brief cover letter (or email) sent along with your proposal.

Please have at least one faculty advisor submit to Melinda a letter of support for your proposal.

The fellowship amount is up to $2,000. Along with your budget, you must indicate any other support (income or research expenses) you have from UCI for the summer.

You must currently be a graduate student affiliated with CPIP to apply for this fellowship opportunity.

To recap, we need:

  • 1 page research proposal with budget
  • cover letter/email indicating your commitment to present and submit a draft in the fall, contact information for you and your advisor, and your anticipated graduation date
  • at least one faculty letter of support

2024

The Center for Population, Inequality, and Policy offered summer research fellowships in 2024 to graduate students working on papers related to the Center’s agenda. These fellowships provided each graduate student with $3,000 for stipend support and research expenses. The fellowship recipients gave short presentations at an event hosted by CPIP during the fall quarter 2024.

The summer research fellowships were highly competitive. CPIP received 25 applications and awarded four fellowships.
